October 3rd, 2007 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Flower Girl Etiquette |
I understand the importance of having a flower girl at your wedding. Having that little niece or cousin walk down the isle in their tiny dress, little curls in their wispy hair, and delicately throwing flower petals onto the isle that you will soon be walking on. It's a beautiful picture...and then you realize that you have just entrusted a 3 year old to that job.... |
You might not understand what kind of pressure that can be. As a former flower girl myself, I remember the big task that was in front of me. The isle that seemed to go for miles, multitudes of strangers staring at you, its stressful! Unfortunately, no one, at least to my 4 yr old recollection, ever told me that I was supposed to throw the flower petals. So I just walked down that big isle with my little white basket and beautiful rose petals in front of me until I reached the wedding party standing at the front where I received many disappointed looks. It's enough to give a girl a complex. |
A similar turn of events took place at a wedding we shot recently. There were two cute but young flower girls. The first girl nailed it. She threw her handfuls of flowers onto the sandy isle where the bride was soon to follow. The other girl however placed one petal down at a time. |
When she was finished putting that petal down she then continued to pick it back up again and place it back in her basket. Even with the attempted help from one of the wedding party, the situation did not improve. The second flower girl then started to pick up all the petals that the first flower girl had already thrown down. While this makes for a good story it does not necessarily make for a smooth ceremony. So for all of you future brides or wedding planners...choose your flower girls wisely and Please...Please... explain to them that they are supposed to throw the flowers. Then practice over and over again. It wil save everyone a lot of grief and counceling in the end. Then remember that with young girls, in the heat of the moment even the best plans can go south. It does make for memorable pictures that will tell part of your wedding story for years to come. |
